The year 2024 saw another eye-opening set of discoveries at airport security checkpoints across the United States, as the Transport Security Administration (TSA) revealed its top 10 craziest catches. With millions of passengers flying daily, TSA agents continue to keep airports safe, uncovering some of the most bizarre and dangerous items attempting to be smuggled onto planes.
Among the wildest catches this year, a gun hidden in a baby stroller took the top spot. William P. Hobby Airport in Houston saw a traveler trying to sneak a firearm in the side pocket of a stroller with a baby inside. TSA officials followed strict protocols, immediately notifying local law enforcement, who took over the situation.
Even if a traveler holds a concealed weapons permit, firearms are prohibited in carry-on luggage. The penalty for such offenses can reach up to $14,950, depending on the specifics of the discovery.
Gun in a LEGO Box and Snakes in Pants
Another shocking find came from Newark Liberty International Airport, where TSA agents found a disassembled 9mm handgun inside an Avengers-themed LEGO box. The gun was cleverly hidden in a red combat boot, but its concealed location didn’t fool security. The suspect, a Mississippi man, was arrested before boarding his flight to Atlanta.
Meanwhile, Miami International Airport made headlines in April when two live snakes were discovered in a traveler’s trousers. Hidden in a sunglasses bag, the small reptiles were safely handed over to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. “This is one of the strangest things we’ve found,” said a TSA officer, expressing disbelief at the bizarre smuggling attempt.
Blades, Guns, and Other Hidden Surprises
Other notable discoveries included methamphetamine concealed in crutches at Portsmouth International Airport in New Hampshire and a blade hidden inside a laptop at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Washington. TSA agents also found a vaping device tucked inside a Colgate toothpaste tube at Chicago Midway International Airport, and a gun wrapped in foil inside a teapot at Portland International Airport in Oregon.
TSA agents uncovered a replica IED attached to a walkie-talkie at El Paso International Airport in Texas, marking one of the most concerning finds of the year.
The Risks of Smuggling Dangerous Items
While these items may seem outlandish, TSA officers stress the importance of vigilance. “People continually try to bypass security with increasingly creative methods,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey. “But our officers are trained to spot even the most unusual concealments.”
In 2024, TSA intercepted around 20 firearms daily, with over 64 firearms found across Idaho’s six airports alone. As airport security technology continues to evolve, so do the smuggling tactics, making the job of TSA officers more critical than ever.
