Ford is recalling approximately 85,000 Explorer SUVs due to a potential engine fire risk, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Friday. The recall affects vehicles from the 2020 to 2022 model years, specifically those equipped with the Police Interceptor Utility package and powered by 3.3L hybrid and gas engines.

The NHTSA warned that in the event of a motor failure, oil and fuel could leak into the engine compartment and gather near ignition sources, creating a significant fire risk. Ford’s Police Interceptor Utility package, designed for law enforcement, includes enhanced powertrain options, reinforced structure, and additional cargo storage compared to the standard civilian model.
