Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities have been reported as the incident happened while spectators were enjoying the thrilling races.

Witnesses at the Desert Race have stated that the fire originated from a burning ember that fell from a food vendor’s barbecue onto the dry winter grass.

Within moments, the flames rapidly spread and engulfed the nearby parked vehicles. Although owners rushed to the scene, many cars were already reduced to ashes or still burning.

Emergency services were called, but due to the large number of vehicles involved and the wintery conditions that facilitate wildfires, firefighters faced significant challenges in containing the blaze.

Videos captured by onlookers and shared on social media reveal attempts to push vehicles away from the fire’s reach.

However, only a few could be saved as the flames quickly consumed one car after another. Various models, including Ford Rangers, VW Golfs, Toyota Quantums, a Hyundai Tucson, and a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, met their fiery demise.

The Botswana police are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and no official statements have been released as of now.

Authorities are collecting eyewitness accounts and gathering evidence to determine the unfortunate incident’s root cause.

As the investigation progresses, more information regarding the cause and the extent of the damage is expected to emerge.

The event organizers have expressed their concern and commitment to collaborating with the authorities in uncovering the cause of the incident. They have reassured the public that necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
