Ford’s popular Escape SUV could make a comeback in 2029 as an electric vehicle, offering drivers another potential option in the growing electric SUV market.

The American automaker has ended production of the petrol-powered Escape after 25 years. However, reports suggest the nameplate could return with an electric powertrain and a new manufacturing strategy.

Ford has described the SUV’s departure as a possible temporary break, saying it “may be taking a breather for now”. The reported comeback could give the familiar model a second life as the company works to make electric vehicles more accessible.

Ford Escape electric revival reportedly planned for 2029

According to reports by Electrek, Ford could begin manufacturing the electric Escape at its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky in 2029.

The SUV is expected to use Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, an architecture designed to support the company’s next generation of electric vehicles.

Ford Authority previously reported that the Escape name could return on the new platform. However, Ford has not publicly confirmed all the reported specifications, pricing or launch details.

The Escape could follow Ford’s planned Fathom electric pickup, which is expected to enter the market in 2027. Both vehicles would form part of the company’s efforts to develop more affordable electric models.

The reported timeline also offers a potential future for the Louisville factory after production of the petrol Escape ended. The facility is expected to play a role in Ford’s electric vehicle manufacturing plans.

What could the electric Escape look like?

The electric Escape is expected to retain dimensions similar to those of the outgoing petrol model, although its final design has not been confirmed.

The existing Escape measures approximately 180.1 inches (4.57 metres) long, 74.1 inches (1.88 metres) wide without mirrors and 66.1 inches (1.68 metres) high. Its wheelbase measures 106.7 inches (2.71 metres).

If the electric version maintains a similar footprint, it would compete in the compact SUV segment. Potential rivals include the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson, although the electric Escape would compete more directly with electric models in the same price and size categories.

An electric powertrain could also give Ford an opportunity to rethink the vehicle’s interior packaging, technology and driving experience.

However, important details remain unknown. Ford has not confirmed the proposed model’s battery capacity, driving range, charging speed, performance or expected retail price.

These specifications will be crucial in determining whether the electric Escape can attract buyers looking for a practical family vehicle without the running costs associated with petrol.

Could the electric Escape save drivers money?

For drivers considering an electric SUV, the potential financial benefits extend beyond the purchase price.

Electric vehicles generally have fewer routine powertrain maintenance requirements than petrol-powered cars. They also avoid petrol expenditure, although owners still need to account for electricity, insurance, tyres, servicing and other running costs.

The savings will depend on how and where the vehicle is charged. Drivers who can charge at home, particularly during cheaper electricity periods, may find electric motoring more economical than relying on public charging networks.

For families covering substantial daily distances, these savings could become significant over several years.

However, the total cost of ownership will depend on the electric Escape’s eventual purchase price, efficiency, insurance costs and battery warranty. Without confirmed specifications, it is too early to calculate reliable savings for prospective buyers.

Ford’s affordable EV strategy takes shape

The reported Escape revival comes as Ford prepares to introduce its Fathom electric pickup, another model aimed at making electric vehicles more affordable.

The Fathom is expected to have a starting price of $28,350, before a $1,595 destination charge. That would bring its advertised starting cost to $29,945, keeping it below the $30,000 threshold before applicable taxes or other charges.

Preorders are scheduled to open in early 2027, according to the supplied reports.

The pickup is expected to include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and bidirectional charging. It is also reported to be designed for Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology, although final equipment and availability will depend on the production specification.

Ford chief executive Jim Farley has described the Fathom as a “breakthrough product” during the company’s third-quarter earnings call.

The vehicle is important to Ford’s wider electric strategy because price remains a major consideration for customers deciding whether to move away from petrol-powered vehicles.

If the Fathom succeeds, an electric Escape could extend that strategy into the family SUV market, where buyers often prioritise space, practicality, efficiency and affordability.

What happened to the petrol Escape?

The petrol-powered Escape spent approximately 25 years in Ford’s model range, becoming a familiar choice for drivers seeking a compact SUV.

Its departure leaves customers looking for a replacement within Ford’s wider SUV portfolio. The company’s website now directs visitors from the Escape page towards other models.

Ford’s Edge has also been discontinued, although the company describes that model’s production run as over. The different wording surrounding the two vehicles has added to speculation that the Escape could return.

A revival would allow Ford to retain an established name while introducing a vehicle built around electric technology.

However, a familiar badge alone will not guarantee success. Buyers will want competitive pricing, dependable battery performance, convenient charging and enough driving range for everyday journeys.

A second chance for an established name

The reported electric Escape represents a possible new chapter for a vehicle that has served petrol-powered SUV buyers for a quarter of a century.

For Ford, the challenge will be to turn that familiarity into a compelling electric alternative. The company will need to balance affordability with the range, technology and practicality customers expect from a modern family SUV.

A 2029 production target would also leave several years for the electric SUV market to develop. Competitors are likely to continue improving battery efficiency, charging performance and vehicle affordability during that period.

For consumers, the prospect of an electric Escape is encouraging, but important questions remain unanswered.

The real test will be whether Ford can deliver an electric SUV that is affordable to buy, practical to own and convenient to charge. Until the company confirms its plans, the Escape’s return should be treated as a reported possibility rather than a guaranteed launch.
