Why Americans are pulling back from EVs while Europeans buy more

Americans are not abandoning cleaner cars. They are choosing cheaper and less risky ways to cut fuel costs.

That is the clearest lesson from the widening gap between the US and European electric vehicle markets, where government policy, fuel prices and the number of available models are pushing consumers in opposite directions.

US EV sales fell 30.7% through September from a year earlier, according to Motor Intelligence. Electric cars accounted for only 6% of US vehicle sales, down from 8.5% during the same period in 2025.

Europe has moved in the opposite direction.

Electric vehicles accounted for 23.2% of the European auto market through September, up from 17.7% a year earlier, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.

EV Tax Credit Changes US Buying Decisions

One major difference is government support. US buyers rushed to purchase EVs before a $7,500 federal EV tax credit expired a year ago. Since then, several automakers have discontinued electric models, cancelled planned entries or removed low-cost leasing options.

Consumers have instead turned to hybrid cars. Hybrid sales increased 23% during the first three quarters compared with a year earlier and represented 15.6% of total US vehicle sales.

“There’s still demand out there [for EVs], but the energy and the masses are definitely running to hybrid technology,” said Thad Szott, a Detroit-area dealer selling Ford, Stellantis and Toyota vehicles.

Nissan has also accelerated the launch of a new hybrid system for its Rogue SUV.

Hybrids offer a middle ground for buyers concerned about EV driving range. Tiago Castro, Nissan’s senior vice president of US marketing and sales, called hybrids “a safer choice” for such consumers.

“When we had the government incentive,” Castro said, “it was a different story.”

Europe Gets More EV Choices

European consumers are facing a different market.

More than 150 electric vehicle models were available in Europe during the first half of 2026, up from about 100 in 2024, according to Transport & Environment.

Many cost less than 25,000 euros, while tax breaks in several countries reduce the amount consumers pay upfront.

Automakers are also continuing to introduce EVs to comply with strict European tailpipe-emissions rules.

Chinese automakers have added another source of competition by bringing more electric models into Europe.

In the US, high tariffs and a ban on Chinese-made vehicle software have effectively kept Chinese vehicle brands out of the market.

Used EVs Offer a Cheaper US Option

The US market is not completely turning away from electric cars.

Instead, some buyers are moving down the price ladder.

Sales of used EVs rose 19% through September from a year earlier, according to CarGurus. The increase suggests that consumers who cannot afford new EVs are still looking for ways to reduce fuel costs.

The performance of EV-focused brands also differs from that of traditional automakers.

Tesla’s US sales fell 14% during the first three quarters, according to Motor Intelligence estimates, while Rivian sales rose 29%, helped by its new R2 SUV.

Ford’s EV sales, by comparison, fell 68%, while General Motors recorded a 43% decline.

Honda plans to stop producing its EVs after this year and expand its hybrid offering.

“Once they scaled back the $7,500, it became obvious” that EV market share would decline, said Lance Woelfer, Honda’s vice president of US auto sales.

Hyundai, however, has seen some recovery as gasoline prices rose in late winter. Its dealers are asking for more EVs, said Randy Parker, CEO of Hyundai Motor North America.

“We’re not giving up on EVs by any stretch of the imagination,” Parker said.

The split between the US and Europe shows that EV adoption is not determined by technology alone. For consumers, the price of the car, fuel costs, incentives and available choices can determine which technology makes the most financial sense.
