Heathrow named world’s best major airport for 2026. Here’s why

London Heathrow has been named the world’s best major airport for 2026, despite its long-standing reputation among travelers for crowds, queues and airport stress.

The ranking by Air Advisor puts Heathrow ahead of Dublin Airport and Tenerife South Airport after reviewing 23 of the world’s most-used airports.

The result points to an important part of the airport experience that travelers care about most: getting to their destination on time.

Airport Rankings Put Punctuality First

Air Advisor gave punctuality a 40% weighting in its ranking. The average Google review score also carried a 40% weighting.

The remaining 20% was split across transport costs, shopping experience, transfer distance and Skytrax ratings.

Heathrow finished with a weighted score of 16.94, narrowly ahead of Dublin at 16.74. Tenerife South ranked third with 14.81.

Heathrow scored 21 points for punctuality and 15 points for Google reviews. Its overall result shows how strongly reliable airport operations can shape the final ranking.

Los Angeles International Airport had the highest punctuality score at 22 points, while Bordeaux-Mérignac scored 23. But both lost ground in other parts of the ranking.

Heathrow Handles Millions of Passengers

The scale of Heathrow is a key part of the story.

The airport handled 84.5 million passengers in 2025 and recorded a 79.14% punctuality rate. That was above the 74.04% average for the 23 airports reviewed by Air Advisor.

Heathrow also reported 23.4 million passengers in the third quarter of 2025, including 8 million passengers in August.

The airport said 97% of passengers passed through security in less than five minutes. It also added nine new routes and three airlines in 2025, including Riyadh Air, Air Peace and IndiGo.

These figures highlight the challenge facing a major airport infrastructure hub: moving very large numbers of people while keeping flights on schedule.

Airlines Continue to Bet on Heathrow

Heathrow’s appeal also extends to airlines.

Airlines compete for slots at the airport, with carriers using large aircraft to make the most of available capacity.

Qatar Airways, for example, reversed a plan to reduce its Airbus A380 winter service between Doha and Heathrow. The airline is set to operate up to twice daily.

Across all airlines, flights between London Heathrow and Doha could reach up to 12 daily services.

The 2026/2027 winter season is also expected to see six airlines operate the Airbus A380 from Heathrow: British Airways, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qantas, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.

Together, they are expected to average 20 daily A380 departures.

Modern Aircraft Help Heathrow Manage Its Limits

Heathrow also operates under strict noise regulations.

The airport is capped at 480,000 aircraft movements and has a limited noise budget between 11:30 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Aircraft receive a Quota Count based on their certified noise performance.

Heathrow said 80% of aircraft using the airport now meet ICAO Chapter 14 noise standards. These aircraft must produce at least seven decibels less noise than the previous Chapter 4 standard.

The Airbus A350 is another example of how newer aircraft can help airports manage capacity and environmental limits. The aircraft can produce up to nine decibels less noise than some widebody rivals.

The Ranking Comes With a Warning

Heathrow’s top position does not mean the airport is free from problems. Extreme summer weather disrupted hundreds of flights. Of 900 flights affected at Heathrow and Gatwick, 474 were at Heathrow.

UK air traffic control service NATS said safety requirements meant aircraft had to avoid affected areas and be spaced further apart, limiting the number of flights that could operate safely.

Still, Air Advisor’s 2026 ranking gives Heathrow a clear advantage: reliability at scale.

For passengers, that may be the most important measure of all.

The airport that many travelers love to complain about has been ranked No. 1 because, according to the data used by Air Advisor, it is highly effective at doing the basic job of an airport — moving millions of people from A to B.
