Motorcyclists face a risk every time they hit the road. 98% of motorcycle accidents result in injuries, with many affecting the lower body. A Swedish startup, Mo’cycle®, has developed Airbag Jeans, a first-of-its-kind protective gear designed to inflate in 125 milliseconds upon impact, reducing the severity of injuries.

The jeans are made from Armalith, an aerospace-grade denim that combines ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) with cotton fibers. The fabric is five times stronger than steel yet flexible enough for daily wear. Inside, a CO₂-powered airbag system is tethered to the motorcycle. If a rider is thrown from their bike with a force greater than 80 pounds, the airbag inflates, cushioning the hips, thighs, and tailbone from impact. The design also includes built-in knee protectors for extra safety.

The innovation has already gained global recognition. Mo’cycle launched Airbag Jeans through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign in 2023, receiving backing from a European Union grant and investors from a Shark Tank-style TV show. By fall 2023, the French government awarded the jeans a traffic safety innovation prize, cementing their place as a game-changer in road safety.

The jeans are produced in Italy and France, with materials sourced from Spain. To enhance accessibility, Mo’cycle designed the airbag system to be reloadable, allowing users to replace the CO₂ cartridge after deployment. The brand has also introduced an Airbag Outfit, which combines the jeans with a matching airbag vest for full-body protection.

Mo’cycle has ambitious plans for expansion. In March 2024, the company joined Swedish crowdfunded angel investment platform Accumeo, aiming to scale production and improve logistics. The ultimate goal? A stock exchange listing within five years, positioning Mo’cycle as a leader in motorcycle safety innovation.
