Mercedes-Benz has become the first car manufacturer to join the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), a global network of companies working to replace fossil carbon with sustainable alternatives.
The RCI, launched by nova-Institut, connects industries in chemicals, energy, and manufacturing to develop new ways of keeping carbon in circulation. Instead of drilling for new petroleum, members use captured CO₂, biomass, and recycled materials to make everyday products, including vehicle components.
By joining forces with leading corporations such as BASF, Covestro, Michelin, and the WWF, Mercedes-Benz aims to accelerate the shift towards a circular carbon economy. The initiative could drastically reduce emissions tied to car manufacturing long before a vehicle ever hits the road.
For drivers, this move means future Mercedes vehicles will contain renewable, low-impact materials, from interiors to plastic trims, reducing dependence on oil-based components while maintaining the brand’s luxury performance.
Beginning in 2026, Mercedes-Benz will launch three pilot projects to explore next-generation materials. One program will convert captured CO₂ into automotive plastics, another will use vegetation-based carbon, and a third will develop fully recyclable systems that reuse materials repeatedly. The company will then scale up the most effective solutions across its production lines.
“Joining the Renewable Carbon Initiative is an important step in driving the transition to renewable carbon sources and working with strong partners to develop innovative, fossil-free solutions,” said Ulf Zillig, Vice President of Group Research, Sustainability, and R&D Functions at Mercedes-Benz AG.
In 2024, 87% of Mercedes-Benz’s suppliers had already committed to using materials produced without adding new carbon to the atmosphere. The automaker’s RCI membership builds on this progress, connecting it directly with leading innovators who can help accelerate change across its global supply chain.
This latest milestone strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s broader sustainability vision, to decarbonise its manufacturing, supply, and energy use while setting new benchmarks for environmentally responsible luxury mobility.
