The Automobile Association of Kenya (AAK) has introduced the “Best Young Driver Contest” in Kenya to raise awareness about road safety among the youth. This initiative, in collaboration with Fédération Internationale l’Automobile (FIA), aims to promote responsible driving habits and reduce road accidents in the country.

It is open to individuals aged between 18 and 24 years old who hold a valid driver’s license. Participants will be assessed based on their knowledge of road safety rules, driving skills, and overall awareness of the importance of safe driving practices.

Furthermore, the contest consists of two stages: a written examination and a practical driving test. The written exam will assess participants’ theoretical understanding of road safety regulations, traffic signs, and defensive driving techniques.

Those who pass the written exam will proceed to the practical driving test, where they will demonstrate their ability to apply road safety principles in real-world scenarios. The winner of the contest will receive a cash prize and be recognized as the “Best Young Driver” in Kenya.

Through this contest, the AAK aims to instill a culture of responsible driving among young individuals and encourage them to become ambassadors of road safety in their communities. By targeting the youth, who are often more prone to risky driving behaviors, the AAK hopes to contribute to the reduction of road accidents and fatalities in Kenya.

Similarly, the contest serves as a platform to educate young drivers on the importance of adhering to traffic rules and adopting safe driving habits to protect their own lives and those of others on the road.

Top three Kenya Road Safety Laws you should know about:

In Kenya, there are three important road safety laws that everyone should know and follow. These laws are in place to keep people safe while on the roads.

The first law is about wearing seat belts. It is mandatory for all people in a vehicle to wear their seat belts. This means that both the driver and the passengers, whether sitting in the front or the back, must buckle up. Wearing seat belts can help prevent serious injuries in case of an accident.

The second law is about speed limits. Speed limits are rules that tell us how fast we can drive on different roads. In cities and towns, the speed limit is usually 50 kilometers per hour (31 miles per hour), while on highways it can be between 80 to 100 kilometers per hour (50 to 62 miles per hour). Following these speed limits is important because it helps us avoid accidents and gives us enough time to react to any unexpected situations.

The third law is about drunk driving. It is against the law to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Kenya. This is because being drunk or high impairs our ability to drive safely. The legal limit for alcohol in our blood is 0.08%. Driving under the influence puts not only our own lives at risk but also the lives of others. If caught drunk driving, we can face fines, lose our driver’s license, or even go to jail.

It is important for everyone to be aware of and follow these road safety laws in Kenya. By doing so, we can help create a safer environment on the roads and protect ourselves and others from accidents.
