The Tour de France was held for the 109th time in 2022. It began on July 1, 2022, in Copenhagen, Denmark, and ended on July 24, 2022, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris with the final stage.
This year, 176 riders from 22 teams lined up at Copenhagen’s starting line. They rode the most advanced bikes with the best technology including the following:
The latest Trek Madone SLR
It is said that this seventh-generation Madone SLR is 300g lighter and “60 seconds faster per hour” than its predecessor.
According to bikeradar.com, this is because Trek changed the shapes of the tubes, rethought the connection between the seat tube and the top tube, and added a new integrated handlebar that makes for a “more aerodynamic riding position.”
Trek says that the new design is “60 seconds faster per hour” than the bike it replaces and is just as compliant, even though it doesn’t have the IsoSpeed decoupler.
“We wanted to make Madone the world’s fastest road bike. Years of research and development went into making the seventh-generation Madone as aerodynamic as possible. As a result, the frame, cockpit, and rider position are 19 watts faster than ever before,” according to the maker.
Every part of the new Madone SLR was carefully shaped to make it our most aerodynamic road race frame and cockpit ever. The brand-new IsoFlow technology soaks up road bumps that make you tired so you can ride longer and stronger.
IsoFlow is a race-focused improvement on the comfort of IsoSpeed. It bends over bumps to make the ride smoother, improves aerodynamics, and loses weight to save precious seconds in the saddle.
FOIL RC
Scott updated its Foil RC aero road bike before the Tour de France, with Team DSM riding it at the Grand Boucle. The new race machine promises big improvements in aerodynamics, weight, and stiffness, which are known as the “holy trinity” of bike performance.
“The Scott Foil RC has been very successful and has won almost everything. Because of this, we decided to make the bike even better to meet the needs of riders today,” according to the maker. “Usually, when you bought a bike, you had to choose between aerodynamics, weight, and comfort. With the all-new Foil RC, you no longer have to choose, because you get all three in one amazing-looking bike.”
The new Foil RC is 21 percent faster, 9 percent lighter, and 10 percent more comfortable than the old Foil RC. From the start, the team looked at the bike, its parts, and the rider as a whole. When we look at all three parts together, we see real-world aero gains. Each design choice was made to make the whole system run as fast as possible. According to the maker’s website, this means you get to your destination faster.
Pinarello Bolide
In 2013, the Bolide was made especially for Team Sky. In 2015, Sir Bradley Wiggins used the Bolide HR to break the Hour Record. Then, in 2016, Pinarello came out with the Bolide TT, which went on to win a lot of TT races during grand tours, national championships, and world championships on the road. It also had unmatched success on the track, where it won multiple medals in team and individual pursuit at the Olympics and world championships.
On top of this strong foundation, Pinarello has added the latest technological improvements, such as the impressive new developments in Computational Fluid Dynamics, which helped Pinarello’s engineers make the new Bolide F much more aerodynamic. The engineers at Pinarello were able to not only design a bike that was more aerodynamic, but also make the frame kit and brakes 170g lighter.
Again, Geraint Thomas, who won the Tour de Suisse overall, was seen riding it in the final stage time trial. The frame’s shape is very similar to that of the Dogma F road bike. It also now has disc brakes instead of rim brakes.
Merak De Rosa
The Merak is a racing bike light, quick to respond, and very comfortable. This racing machine has an ultralight carbon frame made with modern EPS technology. The cable routing is fully integrated for a clean look and a more precise ride.
Team Cofidis designed and built it to be fast on climbs, flats, downhills, in Granfondos, and on the hardest stages of the World Tour.
Merak 2022 Disc is De Rosa’s most advanced technology. Twenty years after Plouay won, De Rosa’s Merak is still fighting hard to take every inch of road from its rivals.
De Rosa is an Italian company with headquarters in Milan. In the 1960s and 1970s, it was known for making bikes for teams like Faema and Molteni.
Similarly, the Merak only has disc brakes, not rim brakes, and has 12mm thru-axles in the front and back to keep the wheels in place.
The Colnago Prototipo
The Italian company that makes bikes made a new prototype race bike called the Colnago Prototipo. At the 2022 Tour de France, the Prototipo was only available to riders of UAE Team Emirates. There were five different trim grades, but based on rider feedback, there will soon only be one option.
Colnago says that the Prototipo shows a new way of building. Even though the final design is a monocoque frame, the first benchmark tests were done on each part of the “new C series” frame.
With this method, the company was able to figure out the thickness and placement of the carbon fibre in a more comprehensive way, which improved accuracy and saved time.
Conclusion
The total distance covered by the 109th Tour de France was 3,328km, or 2,068 miles. This makes it the second longest of the three Grand Tours in 2022, after the Giro d’Italia, which covered 3410.3km. The Vuelta a Espaa, which covered 3280.5km, was the shortest.
