General Motors has announced a major milestone in America’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure push, one that could finally make “range anxiety” a thing of the past.

In partnership with Pilot Company and EVgo, GM has helped establish more than 200 fast-charging stations across nearly 40 states, bringing the US much closer to its goal of coast-to-coast EV travel. The initiative aims to reach 500 charging sites and 2,000 stalls by the end of next year.

For millions of EV owners, the fear of running out of battery power — known as range anxiety, has long stood in the way of widespread adoption. But this network expansion, particularly into rural and underserved highway routes, marks one of the largest steps yet in closing that gap.

“Our collaboration with General Motors and EVgo continues to bring highway-based charging to more routes where this critical infrastructure is needed,” said Shannon Sturgil, Senior Vice President of Alternative Fuels at Pilot.

Each new station is strategically placed at busy interstate travel centers, complete with restaurants, Wi-Fi, and rest areas, turning long charging stops into convenient travel breaks rather than inconveniences.

Analysts say this milestone is “critical” for accelerating EV adoption across the US. According to the US Department of Energy, EV sales are expected to surpass 2 million units in 2025, with more than 4 million EVs projected on American roads by 2027. Reliable charging infrastructure is essential to meet that growth.

Beyond convenience, the environmental impact is significant. Every mile powered by electricity helps reduce harmful emissions from petrol vehicles, cutting carbon pollution and improving air quality in communities across the country.

Industry experts note that home charging remains the cheapest option, saving drivers up to $1,000 per year compared to public stations. Yet, for long-distance travel, a dependable highway network remains key, and GM’s new rollout is a major leap forward in achieving that vision of all-electric freedom from coast to coast.
