The South African used car market stayed robust in November 2024, with 32,158 units sold, according to AutoTrader data. While sales dipped 8% from October and 0.4% year-on-year, demand for reliable pre-owned vehicles remains strong.
The Ford Ranger claimed the top spot, with 2,090 units sold. “The Ranger continues to prove its reliability and popularity,” said a market analyst. Buyers paid an average of R473,215 for models averaging 77,697 km and five years old.
Second place went to the Toyota Hilux, with 1,527 sales at an average price of R442,483. The average mileage was 105,520 km, and models averaged six years old. “The Hilux remains a trusted workhorse in South Africa,” said a local dealer.
Volkswagen secured third and fourth spots with the Polo (1,431 units) and Polo Vivo (1,239 units). The Polo’s average price was R269,088, with mileage around 68,629 km. The Polo Vivo, a more affordable option, averaged R200,540 and 56,921 km.
SUVs also made an impact. The Toyota Fortuner ranked fifth with 739 units sold, averaging R466,598 and 106,328 km. “SUVs like the Fortuner continue to offer versatility for families,” said another dealer.
Other popular models included the Suzuki Swift (602 units), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (558 units), and Isuzu D-Max (506 units). The luxury C-Class was the only high-end vehicle to make the top 10, with an average price of R480,000.
Completing the list were the Nissan NP200 (500 units) and Toyota Starlet (490 units), showcasing consistent demand for budget-friendly options.
