Chinese electric vehicle (EV) firm, BYD, has announced a significant partnership with tech giant Huawei, marking a strategic move in the rapidly evolving EV market. The collaboration will see BYD’s Fangchengbao off-road electric vehicles equipped with Huawei’s cutting-edge autonomous driving system, a move aimed at bolstering the automaker’s presence in the premium EV segment.
The first model to feature the Qiankun intelligent driving system will be the Bao 8 SUV, which is expected to hit the market later this year. This partnership comes as BYD strives to enhance the appeal of its high-end brands—Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang—in a bid to boost profitability. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, these premium brands represented only 5% of BYD’s total sales in the first half of the year.
“The integration of Huawei’s advanced technology underscores BYD’s commitment to innovation as we continue to elevate our premium offerings,” a BYD spokesperson stated.
The collaboration also highlights the intensifying competition among Chinese EV manufacturers to integrate advanced autonomous driving features. BYD has long maintained a competitive edge through its vertical integration strategy, which includes manufacturing key components like batteries in-house. However, the company has recognized the need to enhance its smart driving capabilities, particularly in its upscale models.
BYD has been investing heavily in the development of its own advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), hiring thousands of engineers over the past year. Despite these efforts, the automaker continues to rely on external suppliers for certain intelligent features in its luxury models. For instance, BYD’s Denza line utilizes ADAS technology from Momenta.
This partnership with Huawei further cements the tech giant’s growing influence in the EV sector. Huawei’s ADAS technology is also set to be used by other major players, including Volkswagen’s Audi, for their electric vehicles in the Chinese market.
With this move, BYD is not only advancing its technological capabilities but also positioning itself as a stronger contender in the premium EV market, where innovation and smart features are increasingly becoming key differentiators.
