An all-female crew has completed Blue Origin’s 31st mission aboard its New Shepard rocket. The nine-minute suborbital flight featured a potent mix of pop culture icons and pioneering scientists, making it one of the most emotionally charged and widely watched launches yet.

Passengers included global superstar Katy Perry, celebrated journalist Gayle King, and Lauren Sanchez, media executive and partner to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. They were joined by former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics expert Amanda Nguyen, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn.

This brief journey to the Kármán line, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space, lasted just nine minutes, with only four minutes of weightlessness. But the emotional impact was profound, as the crew emerged from the capsule, visibly moved, many in tears.

A Flight That Moved the World

Katy Perry described the trip as “second only to being a mom,” serenading her fellow crewmates with What a Wonderful World mid-flight. “This is all for the benefit of Earth,” she said, eyes brimming with emotion.

Gayle King, who openly admitted her fear of flying, said the G-forces were challenging but added, “There was a real sense of sisterhood in that capsule.” Though she declined the astronaut title after two days of training, King hopes the mission inspires more women to chase dreams beyond the skies.

Scientist Aisha Bowe described the view of Earth as transformative. “There are no boundaries, no borders—just the Earth,” she said. “I picked the right dream.”

First-ever all-female spaceflight uniforms unveiled

This mission also broke ground with fashion. For the first time in history, flight suits were custom-designed exclusively for women. Five months prior, Sanchez enlisted Oscar de la Renta’s creative directors, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, to design tailored suits through 3D body scans of each crew member.

The result was a sleek, motocross-inspired uniform focused on the “four Fs”: function, fashion, flare, and the future. “These suits were made for women, not just adjusted from men’s gear,” said Sanchez. Perry added, “Functional fashion won the day, but honestly, no one noticed anything but the moment.”

Watching from the ground were an equally star-studded group: Oprah Winfrey, Khloé Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Orlando Bloom, and Jeff Bezos all cheering a mission that, though short, marked a significant leap for gender representation in space exploration.
