Kaduna State and the French Development Agency (AFD) have launched the Kaduna Bus Rapid Transit (KBRT) project, a €110 million initiative to transform public transportation in the state. The project, the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria and the second in the country after Lagos, aims to provide a modern, efficient, and environmentally friendly transport system for residents.

Governor Uba Sani, French Ambassador Marc Fonbaustier, and other key officials attended the launch event, which included a detailed presentation of the 24km BRT corridor, 30 stations, a dedicated bus depot, street lighting, pedestrian crossings, and an Intelligent Transport System (ITS). The project will integrate with other transport systems to enhance connectivity across Kaduna and beyond.

A key highlight was a bus tour along the planned corridor, stopping at significant locations, including the Kaduna Bridge, which will be widened to accommodate dedicated BRT lanes. Officials emphasised the project’s potential to ease congestion, reduce travel time, and provide safer, more reliable transportation for residents.

Governor Sani described the project as a milestone in Kaduna’s urban development, stating, “The KBRT system will modernize transportation, support economic growth, and improve the quality of life for our citizens.” The French Ambassador praised the collaboration, highlighting that Kaduna’s transport model could inspire other Nigerian cities.

Once operational, the KBRT is expected to serve 160,000 passengers daily, giving at least 100,000 residents direct access to the system. The project will significantly cut carbon emissions, saving an estimated 45,000 tons of CO² annually, while also attracting local and international investment.
