Car manufacturers from around the globe have gathered at the IAA Mobility 2023 in Munich, Europe’s largest auto show. One of the main themes at the event is the fierce competition between European and Chinese automakers in the electric vehicle (EV) market. European companies are striving to introduce more affordable EVs to catch up with China’s lead in developing cost-effective, consumer-friendly models.
This competition unfolds against the backdrop of an ongoing EV price war, partly instigated by Tesla’s efforts to reduce EV prices globally. Here’s a roundup of the major EV reveals and news from the 2023 Munich auto show:
1. Audi Q6 e-tron
Audi showcased the Q6 e-tron at IAA 2023, focusing on its new cockpit and interior design. The highlight is the “Digital Stage,” featuring three screens on the dashboard. The first, an 11.9-inch screen in front of the driver, displays the gauge cluster and vehicle information. It connects to a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display with ambient lighting. Another 10.9-inch screen in front of the passenger offers audio and navigation controls, with a privacy mode setting.
Additionally, the Q6 e-tron boasts an augmented reality heads-up display on the windshield. This display provides information such as speed, traffic signs, and navigation.
2. BMW Vision Neue Klasse
BMW revealed the Vision Neue Klasse, an electric concept car representing the automaker’s next generation of EVs. The car embodies a blend of the old and new, with BMW aiming for a “clear,” “elegant,” and “timeless” design language. It features the BMW Panoramic Vision heads-up display and various other features that transform human-car interaction.
BMW plans to begin production of vehicles on this platform in 2025, aiming to double its EV sales by the end of 2023, with 15% of global car sales being electric.
3. BYD’s New EV Lineup
Chinese automaker BYD announced five electric cars for the European market at IAA. The BYD Seal D-sedan, built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, integrates the body and battery for better structural strength, offering around 350 miles of range and rapid acceleration. BYD also presented the BYD Seal U, an SUV version of the Seal.
BYD introduced its premium sub-brand Denza to the European market, including the D9 MPV, a seven-seater hybrid.
4. Mercedes’ Compact G-Wagon EV
Mercedes-Benz plans to build a smaller, more affordable, all-electric version of its iconic G-Wagon. The “baby” G-Class EV will be “fun to drive — on and off the road.” Mercedes intends to launch an electric version of the larger G-Wagon, the EQG, in 2024.
5. Mercedes CLA EV concept
Mercedes-Benz revealed the CLA concept car, the first of its new entry-level EV class. It promises a range of 466 miles, challenging Tesla’s Model S. The CLA class also offers rapid top-up of up to 248 miles in 15 minutes.
These developments reflect the fierce competition and innovation in the EV market, as automakers strive to offer consumers more affordable and technologically advanced electric vehicles.
