Volkswagen is blending nostalgia with innovation as it prepares to electrify some of its most iconic model names. The German automaker has announced a new wave of electric vehicles (EVs) under familiar badges, beginning with the upcoming ID.Polo, slated for release in 2026.

The move is part of Volkswagen’s strategy to strengthen emotional connections with consumers while accelerating its EV transformation. According to CEO Thomas Schäfer, the brand’s heritage is its greatest asset. “Our model names are deeply embedded in people’s minds. They represent reliability, timeless design, and accessible technology. That’s why we’re taking these names into the future. The ID.Polo is just the beginning,” he said.

Joining the lineup will be the ID.Polo GTI, reviving the iconic GTI badge for a new electric generation. Volkswagen is also developing an all-new electric SUV, the ID.Cross Concept, positioned as a zero-emission alternative to the petrol-powered T-Cross.

Volkswagen’s strategy highlights the brand’s desire to merge familiarity with modern innovation. By retaining trusted names, the company aims to reassure long-time fans while attracting first-time EV buyers.

The new EV range will feature higher-quality interiors, physical buttons returning to dashboards, and a more intuitive infotainment system, a direct response to user feedback. These updates underline Volkswagen’s renewed focus on practicality and driver comfort after earlier criticism of its touch-only controls.

Industry analysts say this nostalgia-driven approach could boost Volkswagen’s global EV appeal, especially in Europe, where the Polo and GTI remain household names. The brand’s long-term goal is clear: to become one of the world’s leading EV manufacturers by the end of the decade.

Volkswagen expects its new models to help close the gap between traditional cars and electric mobility. Beyond lower maintenance and fuel costs, EVs offer quieter engines and zero tailpipe emissions, making them more sustainable and enjoyable to drive.

With the ID.Polo scheduled for launch in 2026, Volkswagen’s message is clear, its electric revolution will be powered not just by batteries, but by legacy, emotion, and trust.
