Morocco has unveiled an AI-powered police patrol vehicle named AMANE – meaning “safety” in Arabic. The vehicle promises to redefine public security through facial recognition, real-time surveillance, and intelligent threat detection.

Designed entirely by Moroccan engineers from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), AMANE integrates cutting-edge artificial intelligence and deep learning systems to support real-time license plate recognition and face-matching of wanted individuals.

“This patrol is equipped with advanced technological devices and artificial intelligence systems developed by our in-house technical team,” said Youness Kerbid, Controller General and Head of Software Monitoring at the DGSN.

The prototype, based on a customized Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4, was revealed at the 6th edition of DGSN’s Open Days in El Jadida. The four-day security exhibition drew a record-breaking crowd of 2.4 million attendees, underscoring public enthusiasm for Morocco’s growing tech-based policing strategy.

Equipped with a 360-degree surveillance camera and a drone for aerial monitoring, AMANE allows officers to track incidents far beyond the limits of human vision. A centralized digital command system enables seamless communication between the patrol unit and national command centers. A built-in intelligent alert system also scans for suspicious behaviors and traffic violations in real time.

Kerbid, who also leads the DGSN’s AI projects, noted that the project has been three years in development. “The main challenge was applying the expertise we’ve built through developing urban camera networks and facial recognition systems for judicial identification,” he said.

Deployment of the vehicle will begin with major sporting events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 93rd Interpol General Assembly, both set to be hosted in Morocco. Gradual integration into daily police operations across the country is expected to follow.

“This is part of our broader vision to modernize security services and ensure our law enforcement capabilities meet global standards,” a DGSN spokesperson added.

The Open Days exhibition, themed “Proud to Serve an Ancient Nation and a Glorious Throne,” ends today at the Mohammed VI Exhibition Park, marking a symbolic moment in Morocco’s march toward smarter, safer cities.
