For commuters tired of range anxiety and unreliable public chargers, Aptera’s solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) offers a groundbreaking solution. This futuristic three-wheeler combines efficiency and sustainability, promising up to 400 miles on a single charge, starting at $40,000.

Based in Carlsbad, California, Aptera’s solar panels can add up to 40 miles of range daily in sunny areas like California. This innovation makes it possible for many users to commute without ever needing a traditional charging station. “All you’ve got to do is leave this out in the sun,” said co-founder Chris Anthony, emphasizing the benefits for apartment dwellers and those relying on street parking.

Built for Efficiency and Sustainability

Aptera’s aerodynamic bodywork, boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.13 Cd, and lightweight carbon-fiber construction help it achieve these impressive figures. At just 2,200 pounds, the vehicle is far lighter than most EVs. The initial Launch Edition will feature a 201-horsepower motor powering the front wheels, with plans for an all-wheel-drive version to follow.

The solar panels, a proprietary design, provide a claimed 10,000 miles per year in sunny climates. Even in less sunny areas like Michigan, the panels can deliver approximately 8,000 miles annually. With the average American commute at 30 miles per day, Aptera’s solar technology could eliminate charging stops for most drivers.

Nearly 50,000 Pre-Orders

The company claims nearly 50,000 pre-orders for the vehicle, which is set to begin production by late 2025. Variants with ranges of 250, 600, and 1,000 miles will follow, with entry-level models starting as low as $28,000. Fleet operators, including package delivery and food services, are also being targeted, with the vehicle’s ability to charge overnight using a standard 110-volt outlet.

“This is more than just a car. It’s an opportunity to rethink how we live with energy,” Anthony added.

A Short Ride Through Las Vegas

A recent test ride in Las Vegas revealed a vehicle that feels surprisingly conventional despite its outlandish appearance. The stripped-down prototype showed promise, with quick acceleration and stable handling, even on three wheels. The production model, with butterfly doors and a panoramic view, will likely offer a more polished experience.

While the cabin is minimal, with two digital screens and utilitarian seating, it prioritizes practicality over luxury. Aptera plans to address minor build-quality concerns before launch, ensuring a smoother ride for customers.

The Road Ahead

Aptera’s journey has been fraught with challenges. Founded in 2006, the company initially shuttered in 2011 before being resurrected in 2019. Crowdfunding has played a significant role in its revival, with the production-ready model unveiled at CES 2025 marking a significant milestone.

For eco-conscious drivers, Aptera’s EV presents an affordable and sustainable alternative to traditional electric cars. By harnessing the power of the sun, it promises to reshape the future of mobility. “It’s the most ubiquitous charging network in the world,” Anthony said, smiling under the Las Vegas sun.
