The Nigerian automotive industry, once a beacon of promise in the 1970s and 1980s, faced challenges that led to a decline in domestic production and a surge in vehicle imports. Historically, the country’s automotive sector has faced hurdles, including high production costs, weak demand, and reliance on imports.

However, with a vehicle market size of 1,150,000 units for new and used cars, the country is poised for a revival, especially with the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Amid this, GAC Motors Nigeria, and its partner, the Choice International Group (CIG Motors), have emerged as a trailblazer in the industry, leading a movement towards local production, job creation, and innovation.

Reviving a promising sector

The Nigerian auto industry’s history dates back to the 1970s and 1980s when it had a production capacity of 149,000 units annually. However, various economic challenges, including currency volatility and the end of the commodity boom, hampered its growth. Today, Nigeria’s vehicle market exceeds 1.1 million units for new and used cars, yet it remains a net importer of vehicles, primarily used ones. The National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP – 2014) represents one of the government’s numerous efforts to revive the sector and enhance its competitiveness.

GAC Motors: A vision for growth

At the forefront of this transformation are GAC Motors Nigeria and the Choice International Group (CIG), the fastest-growing automobile brands in Nigeria. GAC Motors is not just selling vehicles; it’s creating opportunities and driving change.

Under the leadership of Chairman and CEO, Chief Diana Chen, GAC Motors has evolved from a small semi-knockdown factory to a full-fledged production hub in Ogba, Lagos. Here, every GAC car sold in Nigeria is assembled, demonstrating a commitment to local manufacturing.

Empowering Nigerians, driving innovation

Central to GAC Motors Nigeria’s ethos is its focus on empowering Nigerians. The company employs over 200 Nigerians in its factory, managed by local professionals.

“GAC Motors is not just selling cars, we are nurturing talent, with a training academy for young engineers from universities like the University of Lagos and Yaba College of Technology,” according to Jubril Arogundade, Group Head of Communication at GAC Motors Nigeria.

Furthermore, its emphasis on after-sales service has created a network of over 20 facilities nationwide, providing direct and indirect employment to thousands. This move has not only contributed to local production but has also created over 200 direct jobs and 1500 indirect jobs across the country.

He also emphasised the importance of after-sales service, stating that “the second sale is coming from a professional after-sales service rendered to the customer.” This dedication to customer service has helped GAC Motors Nigeria build a strong reputation in the market.

A sustainable future: Electric vehicles and local empowerment

Looking ahead, GAC Motors Nigeria is pioneering electric vehicles (EVs) in Nigeria, with the introduction of Wuling EVs. These EVs are not just about vehicles; they represent a holistic solution, including charging infrastructure.

Customization and community impact

Understanding the dynamic Nigerian market, GAC Motors allows for extensive vehicle customization, catering to individual preferences. Moreover, the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) is evident in its projects, like the one empowering over 36,000 young Nigerians and providing them with livelihood opportunities.

The company’s commitment to local content is evident, with plans to manufacture components locally, creating a ripple effect of job opportunities and economic growth.

Driving Nigeria forward, one Innovation at a time

GAC Motors Nigeria’s journey exemplifies the power of innovation and local empowerment in transforming industries.

GAC Motors Nigeria’s partnership with the Lagos State Government is a testament to its commitment to local manufacturing and collaboration. Through this joint venture, a new company called GAC Motors Nigeria was established, responsible for assembling all GAC cars in Lagos.

This partnership has not only boosted local production but has also created a significant number of jobs in the region. In October last year, GAC Motors Nigeria celebrated a major milestone, assembling its 2000th car in Lagos. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, highlighting the importance of this achievement for the local automotive industry. This milestone marks a significant step forward for GAC Motors Nigeria and demonstrates its dedication to driving innovation and growth in Nigeria’s auto sector.

As the company continues to expand its footprint and offer cutting-edge solutions, it’s not just shaping the automotive industry; it’s driving Nigeria forward into a future of sustainable mobility and economic prosperity.
