Toyota has introduced a new version of its long-standing Century model, known for its presence in Japan’s chauffeur-driven market since 1967. This time, Toyota is breaking from tradition by unveiling an opulent SUV that combines traditional Japanese design principles with modern technology, promising an unparalleled experience for both drivers and passengers.

The new Century SUV, set to be released later this year, continues to embody the Japanese concept of “omotenashi,” which focuses on hospitality. However, Toyota’s development team has recognized the changing needs of the chauffeur industry and has designed this new model with a theme called “The Chauffeur.” The design caters to passengers who use their travel time for relaxation or online meetings.

The exterior of the Century SUV exudes regal elegance, incorporating both horizontal and vertical design elements inspired by a loom shuttle motif. While some observers might notice a subtle resemblance to a Rolls-Royce Cullinan from a side profile view, the Century maintains its unique identity through features like “kichomen” chamfering, handcrafted mirror finishes, and a phoenix emblem.

Inside the Century, passenger comfort takes precedence. The spacious cabin boasts rear seats that can fully recline and even offers a “refreshment function” that hints at a massage feature. Sound quality is another highlight, with an audio system crafted by professionals from the music industry, promising a live-performance-like auditory experience. The cockpit is equipped with the latest features for ease of use.

Powering this luxurious SUV is a 3.5L V6 plug-in hybrid engine, which functions as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) for daily commutes and a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) for longer journeys. Toyota claims that this system caters not only to chauffeurs but also to those who enjoy driving for pleasure. The Century offers a “Dynamic Rear Steering” system and an innovative “Rear Comfort mode” to ensure seamless driving and ultimate passenger comfort.

Structural innovations include a separate luggage compartment and noise-reducing laminated glass between the cabin and cargo area, reinforcing the Century’s reputation for exceptional quietness.
