The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that it is opening a recall query into an estimated 51,500 Volkswagen electric vehicles (EVs) in America over concerns related to the vehicle’s door opening while driving. The investigation specifically targets Volkswagen’s electric ID.4 SUVs manufactured between 2021 and 2023.

The NHTSA’s decision to open this inquiry follows the receipt of 12 complaints from consumers regarding the intermittent opening of the vehicle’s door while in motion. Despite these reports, there have been no documented injuries or fatalities attributed to this issue.

This investigation is particularly significant as it follows Volkswagen’s prior recall of the affected vehicles to address water seepage from the doors. The NHTSA’s current query aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the remedies implemented during the automaker’s previous recall efforts.

In response to these developments, Volkswagen America has stated that it is fully cooperating with the NHTSA’s investigation. The company remains committed to ensuring the safety and quality of its vehicles and will work diligently to address any issues identified during this process.

As this investigation unfolds, Volkswagen EV owners are advised to remain vigilant and report any unusual issues or concerns regarding their vehicles to the NHTSA or Volkswagen directly.
