German auto brand, Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled its first-ever plug-in hybrid, the S 580 e. This is in line with the company’s bigger electrification efforts, which also saw the electric G-Class launched a year ago.
“With our first plug-in hybrid model, we combine the luxurious experience typical of Maybach with emission-free local driving when operating in electric drive mode,” said Daniel Lescow, head of Mercedes-Maybach at Mercedes-Benz Group AG. “The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e is a defining moment in the evolution of our heritage brand into an electric future.”
The hybrid drivetrain features a serene interior, with zero local emissions in electric-only mode. Subtle electric-specific elements include a secret charging port on the left side of the vehicle, blue colour highlights in the headlights, and charging indication lights in the instrument panel.
Aslo, the hybrid drive is powered by a highly-efficient six-cylinder engine from the current generation of gasoline vehicles, producing 367 horsepower with reduced fuel consumption and pollutants. The overall system output provides 510 horsepower and maximum torque of 440 Newton-meters with a 0-62 mph speed of 5.1 seconds. A 60 kW DC charger that is available as an option is capable of delivering a full charge in about 30 minutes.
The Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e will be introduced first in China, then Thailand, Europe, and other places. Additional information can be found here.
Maybach, founded by Wilhelm and Karl Maybach in 1909, was acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 2015 as a sub-brand. The demand for the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in particular has increased steadily since its introduction in 2021.
