Mercedes luxury vehicle production in South Germany has lasted over a century, and has recently manufactured its 22 millionth vehicle, the red EQS 580 4Matic in Sindelfingen.
Work began at the Sindelfingen plant in 1919, and it has been Mercedes’ centre of excellence for luxury car production since 1946. It is where the automaker manufactures most of its luxurious vehicles such as the S-Class with combustion and electrified engines, as well as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class. The E-Class, GLC, CLS, S-Class Guard, and Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door were also from the Sindelfingen plant.
“I will like to congratulate my colleagues in Sindelfingen on their impressive production anniversary of 22 million vehicles,” said Jorg Burzer, Mercedes executive responsible for production and supply chain management. “Sindelfingen is and will continue to be our global production network’s centre of excellence for luxury-class vehicles.”
The Sindelfingen factory was founded in 1915 as an aircraft factory, but vehicle production started in 1919.
Notably, Mercedes-Knight 16/45 was the first model to roll off the assembly lines. Large-scale production was established in the 1920s and 1930s, and Sindelfingen reached record capacities in 1966, when twice as many vehicles were built in a single year as were built between 1946 and 1952.
More recently, the plant produced its 20 millionth vehicle, an S-Class S500 PHEV, in 2015 while employing about 37,000 people.
