The long-awaited Cybertruck will not be mass-produced until 2024, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla said.
Musk disclosed this during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call Thursday, January 27, 2023.
During the call, Musk was asked if the upcoming vehicle would meet a mid-2023 production target set in the second quarter of last year.
“We do expect production to begin, I don’t know, maybe this summer,” Musk said. “However, I always try to downplay the start of production because it is always very slow. It grows exponentially, but at first it is very slow.
“As a result, I wouldn’t put too much thought into the start of production. It’s when volume production actually begins, which is next year.”
The futuristic-looking truck was first unveiled in 2019, with Tesla stating that the vehicle would be available for purchase by the end of 2021.
That deadline was eventually pushed back to late 2022, but in March of that year, Tesla delayed production for the third time, pushing it to mid-2023, and now to 2024, the fourth time.
Nonetheless, Cybertruck launch will give Tesla an EV entry into one of the most profitable segments of the US market, as well as a competitor to electric pickups such as F-150 Lightning, GMC Hummer EV, Rivian R1T, RAM 1500 EV and the Chevy Silverado EV.
