The Hyundai Ioniq 5 with e-Corner Modules has the ability to rotate its wheels 90 degrees.
At the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Hyundai Mobis, the Korean automaker’s spare parts and autonomous driving subsidiary, displayed an eye-catching in-wheel module mounted on a prototype Ioniq 5. The CES prototype can also spin 360 degrees, drive diagonally, and steer like a forklift.
The module, dubbed e-Corner, has an electric motor, electronic damper, brake by wire, and steer by wire, making it a full package that can be fitted to a wide range of plug-in automobiles without taking up any space, making engineers’ lives easier.
The concept was first presented in 2018, can spin all of its wheels 90 degrees in the same direction, allowing the automobile to effortlessly enter and exit a parallel parking place.
But that’s not all; the e-Corner system can perform virtually any action. The prototype Ioniq 5 is seen turning all of its wheels at a 45-degree angle, causing the automobile to rotate 360 degrees for a seamless and rapid zero-turn function.
Hyundai hasn’t disclosed any other information regarding its e-Corner module, but it’s evident that it has the potential to streamline the entire EV assembly process while also providing extra flexibility for drivers.
