The legendary “Godzilla” is officially leaving the building. New data shows that Nissan sold just two GT-R sports cars in the United States during the first quarter of 2026. This comes after the car maker stopped making the famous R35 generation in August 2025. With no more new cars being built, buyers can only choose from what is left in the back of the lot.
A Shift to Retail Sales Growth
While the GT-R is fading away, Nissan’s overall business is changing. The company sold 234,318 cars in total this quarter. Even though that is a 7.5% drop, they are seeing strong Retail Sales Growth. Nissan is choosing to sell fewer cars to rental companies and more directly to people. This strategy is helping to boost Dealer Profitability across the country.
The King of SUVs Still Rules
Most people aren’t looking for sports cars anymore. Instead, they want trucks and SUVs. The Nissan Rogue is the leader, with over 70,000 units sold. Even the affordable Sentra is moving fast. The GT-R, once a world-beater, now sits on an aging platform that first came out in 2007. Its 565-horsepower engine can no longer meet new safety and emissions rules.
Is an Electric Sports Car Next?
As the gas-powered GT-R becomes history, fans are looking to the future. Rumors suggest the name could return as an Electric Sports Car. Nissan has promised the GT-R will come back, but they haven’t said when.
For now, the two lucky owners who bought a GT-R this year have a piece of history. As the company focuses on better Inventory Management, the era of the twin-turbo V6 has come to a quiet end.
