Formula 1 drivers have expressed growing frustration with the sport’s governing body, the FIA, citing a lack of transparency and poor communication. Mercedes driver George Russell, who also serves as a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA), voiced concerns during the Las Vegas Grand Prix press conference, highlighting dissatisfaction with recent leadership decisions under FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

“Many of us are a bit fed up with how things are being handled,” Russell said. “The decision to remove race director Niels Wittich just three races before the season’s end came without consultation, leaving drivers feeling sidelined.” The sudden dismissal of Wittich, who had been in the role since 2022, followed the controversial sacking of FIA compliance officer Paolo Basarri.

Russell emphasiSed the need for better collaboration, adding, “It’s not hard to arrange a meeting with Ben Sulayem, but having promises fulfilled is another matter.” His comments reflect broader dissatisfaction among drivers, who recently penned an open letter urging the FIA to treat them “like adults.”

Drivers United in Demands for Reform

The drivers’ letter also raised concerns about inconsistent penalties and lack of clarity around fines, referencing recent controversies involving swearing during press conferences. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc were among those penalized, sparking debate about the FIA’s approach to discipline.

Haas driver Kevin Magnussen drew comparisons to the late Charlie Whiting, a former FIA director widely respected for his rapport with drivers. “Charlie made us feel heard,” Magnussen said. “Now, it feels like it’s us against them, when it should be a partnership.”

Russell acknowledged that while Wittich’s performance had its challenges, firing him without driver input exacerbated tensions. “Sometimes, hiring and firing isn’t the solution,” he said. “Every change sets us back before progress is made. Let’s see if this new era is any better.” Wittich’s replacement, Rui Marques, will oversee the final races starting in Las Vegas.

Unity Among Drivers Marks New Era

Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton highlighted an unprecedented sense of unity among drivers. “We’ve come together more than ever,” Hamilton said. “There are key issues that need addressing, and collaboration with the FIA must improve.”

Max Verstappen called the mid-season change “weird” and suggested such decisions be made during off-seasons to allow smooth transitions.

Similarly, Russell encapsulated the sentiment, stating, “It’s not just about meetings; it’s about action. The FIA needs to be transparent and collaborative.”
