Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva died in a fatal car crash in Spain early Thursday morning. The 28-year-old Premier League and Portugal national team star was traveling with André, 25, when their Lamborghini veered off the A-52 highway near Zamora due to a suspected burst tire. The car caught fire instantly.

Spanish authorities say speed may have been a factor. “Initial investigations point to possible excessive velocity during overtaking,” said a spokesperson from Zamora’s Guardia Civil. Forensic teams confirmed the identities through documents and vehicle registration.

Jota had just returned from Portugal’s Nations League victory in June. Less than two weeks earlier, he married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, leaving behind three children. He was reportedly driving back to Liverpool for preseason training via ferry due to recent minor surgery, avoiding air travel on doctors’ advice.

Outside Anfield, tributes mounted quickly as fans laid scarves, flowers, and candles beneath a large portrait. “Jota was the heart of our recent success,” said Liverpool fan Peter Millea. “He connected with the fans like few do.”

Jota played 26 league games this past season, scoring six goals and assisting four others as Liverpool claimed its 20th English league title. His career total at Liverpool stood at 65 goals over five years. He also won the FA Cup and two League Cups.

His brother André Silva, a forward for Portuguese second-tier side FC Penafiel, was respected for his hard work. “He was on the rise,” said coach Armando Teixeira. “A humble player who gave everything.”

The wake drew thousands to Gondomar, their hometown near Porto. Portugal’s president, national team players, and fans paid final respects at the local Igreja Matriz. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa described the loss as “a tragedy that unites a nation in mourning.”

Premier League rivals paid tribute too. Mohamed Salah called Jota’s death “the first thing to make me afraid to return to Liverpool.” A delegation from Everton laid flowers at Anfield. Even Oasis paused their Cardiff reunion gig to display Jota’s image during “Live Forever.”

Liverpool FC cancelled all pre-season fitness tests scheduled for Friday. The club says it will “honour Jota in every way possible” starting with a memorial chant at the Community Shield.

The funeral takes place Saturday at 10 a.m. in Gondomar. As fans prepare to say goodbye, they remember not just a player, but a man who lived with humility and heart.
