Vava II, Britain's largest superyacht still turns heads 14 years after delivery

The 96-metre Vava II, the largest modern private superyacht ever built in the United Kingdom, continues to attract attention more than a decade after its delivery, recently being spotted anchored off St Tropez.

Built by Devonport Yachts in Plymouth and delivered in 2012, the vessel remains a landmark achievement in British Engineering and Superyacht Construction, highlighting the UK’s ability to compete in one of the world’s most exclusive maritime industries.

A Flagship for British Engineering

Commissioned in 2007 by a Swiss-Italian family, Vava II has remained under the same ownership since delivery. Originally known as Project-55, the yacht was launched in September 2011 before entering service the following year.

The vessel was built at Devonport Yachts, a company rooted in Plymouth’s historic naval dockyards. The shipyard, once part of Babcock International Group, combined military-grade engineering expertise with luxury yacht construction.

Industry observers say the project helped restore international attention to Britain’s yacht-building capabilities.

Luxury Yacht Market Benchmark

Vava II set new standards when she entered service. Built to SOLAS-36 passenger ship standards, she can accommodate up to 36 guests in 18 staterooms and carry a crew of 34.

The yacht features a large beach club, an aft-deck swimming pool, a helideck and expansive entertainment areas. At the time of launch, such large indoor-outdoor leisure spaces were still uncommon in the Luxury Yacht Market.

Exterior styling was created by RWD, while the interiors were designed by Rémi Tessier.

Beyond Luxury: Science and Exploration

Despite being known for Mediterranean cruising, Vava II has also supported scientific research.

The yacht has participated in three expeditions involving scientists from the Zoological Society of London and universities worldwide. Her long-range capability has enabled voyages to Antarctica, Polynesia and the Indian Ocean.

A Connection to Sailing History

The yacht’s owner is also known for success in competitive sailing. After founding Team Alinghi in 2000, he won the America’s Cup in 2003, becoming the first European team to bring the prestigious trophy back to Europe.

More than fourteen years after delivery, Vava II remains both a symbol of luxury and a lasting example of British maritime craftsmanship.
