BYD is building a massive new electric vehicle (EV) factory in central China that will be larger than the entire city of San Francisco.

The project, located in Henan Province, will stretch across 50 square miles, making it one of the largest auto production sites in the world. Drone videos shared online in recent days show the fast rise of this mega-structure, which many viewers describe as “a city with a factory inside it.”

The site is part of BYD’s rapid push to grow production at home while expanding its sales and manufacturing networks across Europe. With the automaker overtaking Tesla in key markets this year, the plant signals how China’s biggest EV producer plans to secure its global lead.

7 things to know and note About BYD’s new mega-facility

1. The factory will cover 50 square miles, bigger than San Francisco’s land area

BYD’s Zhengzhou complex will span 50 square miles, beating San Francisco’s 46.9 square miles.
The size puts it in the same footprint range as many small cities. This scale shows BYD’s intention to support mass production of EVs, batteries, and related components from one location.

2. The site already looks like a mixed-use industrial city

Drone footage reveals high-rise buildings, worker housing, a football pitch, and tennis courts.
The factory looks less like a traditional plant and more like a self-contained industrial zone with living, working, and recreation areas. Online users have joked that it resembles “a city with a factory attached.”

3. Construction is in advanced stages, moving from Phase 5 to Phase 8

Earlier reports show the project had passed Phase 5 and was nearing Phase 8, meaning much of the main structure is close to completion. Despite this, satellite data from Business Insider still estimates only 8 square miles are currently developed. The huge gap between present output and future scope shows how much more expansion is planned.

4. The project is stirring major online reactions and global interest

Videos of the plant went viral across X (formerly Twitter). Comments such as “Looks like Elon’s Tesla factory has some competition” and “How can Tesla compete?” show how strongly the public views BYD’s rise. Many tagged the videos as “staggering” and “unreal,” pointing to the emotional shock of the factory’s size.

5. BYD is gaining ground on Tesla after major wins this year

BYD beat Tesla in European sales in 2025, with its mix of hybrids and pure EVs. The company also launched lightning-fast charging in Europe. It plans to sell its entire lineup across the continent by 2028, signalling a long-term commitment to global expansion.

6. BYD plans to double its European sales network by end-2026

“By the end of 2025, we will be present with 1,000 points of sale in Europe, and next year we are going to double that,” said Maria Grazia Davino, BYD’s Managing Director for Europe, during a Frankfurt event.

The company now operates in 29 European markets and says proximity to customers is key. “We need to win proximity to European customers,” Davino added.

7. Europe is becoming BYD’s next major base for global production

BYD is opening its first European plant in Hungary, planning a second in Turkey, and considering a third in Spain.
European sales hit 80,807 vehicles in the first nine months of 2025—more than triple the year before.
“Localising in a mature region like Europe requires knowledge, dedication, investments, and resources at all levels,” Davino said.

The mega-factory in China supports this move by ensuring a steady supply, lower costs, and faster global distribution.
