Stellantis, one of the world’s leading automakers, is set to invest R3 billion in a new manufacturing facility in South Africa, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion across Africa. The plant, located near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape, is expected to be operational by 2026 and will produce vehicles primarily for the African market.

“South Africa’s strong automotive policy and well-established supply base for pickup trucks made it the perfect choice for this investment,” said Deidre Du Plessis, Stellantis’ Head of Corporate Communications in South Africa. Stellantis, which represents 14 global brands including Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, sees South Africa as a strategic location to cater to the growing demand for vehicles in Africa and the Middle East.

The new factory will produce the Peugeot Landtrek, a light commercial vehicle aimed at the pickup market, which Stellantis hopes will strengthen its position in the region. Around 60% of the vehicles produced at the South African plant will be exported to the broader Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, tapping into the growing demand for affordable, reliable work vehicles.

Stellantis’ decision to manufacture the Peugeot Landtrek comes as the company reshapes its strategy in South Africa. “We are focusing on aligning our brands with local market needs,” Du Plessis added, emphasizing the company’s efforts to differentiate Peugeot and Opel, with Peugeot focusing on light commercial vehicles and Opel continuing to target the passenger car segment.

By broadening its lineup, Stellantis plans to offer more affordable single-cab and double-cab models for businesses, alongside its existing range suited for private consumers. This strategy aligns with Stellantis’ broader goals of expanding its footprint in the MEA region, with Africa seen as a key growth market for the future.

The investment in South Africa follows a global trend of automakers seeking to tap into emerging markets. As Stellantis builds its presence, it aims to not only boost local employment but also strengthen South Africa’s position as a key player in the automotive supply chain.
