TikTok has emerged as a platform where trends gain traction. One particular trend that gained attention last year was the “Kia Challenge,” which involved videos demonstrating how to bypass the anti-theft immobilizers in certain Hyundai and Kia models. Unfortunately, this trend led to a surge in theft cases, leaving numerous vehicle owners as victims and prompting urgent measures to address the security flaws.
In response to the situation, Hyundai has taken proactive steps by offering a settlement for the owners of over 9 million affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles. The settlement, valued at around $200 million USD, aimsagrees to $200 million settlement to compensate those who experienced vehicle theft and incurred losses or damages that were not covered by insurance. Furthermore, affected individuals will also receive reimbursement for the installation of anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks and alarm kits.
Despite the ongoing rollout of the settlement, it is important to note that existing lawsuits related to the security vulnerabilities are still expected to proceed to court.
