Car fires can happen suddenly and without warning, especially while driving on the highway. In the event of a car fire, it is crucial to know what to do to protect yourself and your passengers. This article will provide tips on how to prevent car fires on the highway and what to do if your car catches fire while driving.

Preventing car fires:

Be mindful of fuel levels: A lack of fuel can cause overheating of the fuel pump and this has the potential to result in a fire. Hence, it is essential to monitor fuel levels and avoid letting the fuel tank run dry.

Keep the car clean: Dirt and debris can accumulate under the hood and cause a fire. Regular cleansing of the automobile, particularly the engine compartment, can help prevent car fires.

Avoid smoking in the car: Smoking in the car can cause a fire, particularly if a cigarette is dropped on the upholstery by accident.

Avoid overloading the car:  Overloading your car with weight beyond its capacity can place excessive strain on the engine and other components, thereby increasing the risk of a fire.

Regular Maintenance: Regular Maintenance is essential for preventing automobile disasters. This includes checking the battery, electrical system, fuel system, and brakes.

Steps to take if your car catches fire on the highway:

Pull over: If you notice smoke or flames coming from your car while driving, the first step is to pull over to the side of the road as quickly and safely as possible.

Turn off the engine: Turning off the engine can help prevent the fire from spreading further.

Do hot open the hood: Opening the hood can cause the fire to spread, so it’s best to avoid doing so unless necessary.

Get everyone out of the car and call for help: Ensure that all passengers exit the car as quickly as possible and move to a safe distance from the car. Contact emergency services as soon as possible to report the fire and request assistance.

Use a fire extinguisher: If you have a fire extinguisher in your car, use it to try to extinguish the fire. However, if the fire is too large or spreads too quickly, it’s best to focus on getting everyone to safety and let the professionals handle it.
