Tesla managed to outsell Audi globally in 2024, despite both automakers experiencing a drop in registrations. Tesla sold 1.79 million vehicles, a slight dip of 1.1% from 2023, while Audi’s sales plunged 12% to 1.67 million. The figures highlight Tesla’s continued dominance in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
Audi, which had a strong 2023 with 1.9 million units sold, saw its fortunes reverse in 2024. The German brand’s sales fell sharply in major markets like China, Germany, and North America, where declining demand and tough competition have taken a toll. Although Audi’s EV sales dropped by 8%, the broader decline in overall sales was more significant.
Tesla, in contrast, achieved its success with a focused product lineup, selling only electric vehicles. The American automaker has four main models, including the Model 3, which saw a facelift that contributed to the 2024 sales. This is notable, as Audi offers a wide range of models, including electric, hybrid, and combustion vehicles, but still lagged behind Tesla.
For Tesla, 2024 marked the end of a decade-long sales growth streak, but the company still managed to surpass Audi’s total sales. Tesla’s performance is particularly impressive considering its limited model variety compared to Audi’s extensive lineup.
Audi aims to bounce back in 2025 with new models, including electric versions of its A4, A5, and A6 series. A new joint venture with SAIC in China also aims to boost Audi’s presence in the world’s largest car market, launching several new EVs by mid-2025.
