Elon Musk, the South African-born billionaire, is the CEO of five companies, each with its own unique focus and impact on the world. As a visionary leader, Musk is known for his ambitious projects, such as driving sustainable energy adoption, colonising Mars, and improving transportation.

It is worth noting that the title “4:20 – Time to watch Elon Musk’s 5-a-side game” has a deeper meaning. The term “4:20” originally symbolises a meeting to smoke marijuana and the fourth of April, but it evolved over time to a more general idea of rebellion and counterculture. Similarly, Elon Musk’s ventures are often seen as challenging conventional thought and stretching the limits of innovation. The reference to “4:20” in the title is therefore a tribute to Musk’s disruptive approach to entrepreneurship and his ability to challenge the status quo.

Holding this thought, take a closer look at the performance of each of the five companies headed by Elon Musk: Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.

Twitter

In November 2022, Elon Musk acquired Twitter, the social media platform, for $44 billion. Despite his new role as owner, Musk has stated that he will not be involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. Instead, he plans to use the platform to promote his companies and interact with his followers. In the past, Musk has used Twitter to announce Tesla’s latest products and to share his views on various topics, such as cryptocurrency and space exploration.

Tesla

Tesla, founded by Elon Musk in 2003, is a leader in electric vehicle production and renewable energy. However, according to Forbes, the company’s profits have taken a hit in recent years, with a 24% drop in Q1 2023. This decline has been attributed to increased competition and supply chain disruptions. Despite this setback, Tesla has continued to push forward with its goal of creating a sustainable future.

The company’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy by producing electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions. Tesla’s Model S sedan was the first electric car to win the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 2013, and the Model 3 became the world’s best-selling electric car in 2019. The company is also focused on developing sustainable energy solutions, such as solar panels, batteries, and energy storage systems, to help reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

SpaceX

SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, is a private space exploration company that has disrupted the industry by making space travel affordable and accessible. The company’s impressive achievements include launching the first privately-funded spacecraft to orbit Earth and sending a spacecraft to the International Space Station.

Their main goal is to produce reusable rockets and spacecraft to reduce the cost of space exploration. Their most notable products include the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launch vehicles, the Dragon spacecraft, and the Starlink satellite network. SpaceX has revolutionized the space industry with cutting-edge technology and reusable rocket systems, paving the way for the future of space exploration.

SpaceX’s Starship had a momentous year in 2021, successfully completing its first test flight and inching closer towards Mars colonization. But on April 20, 2023, the world’s largest rocket system met a tragic end when it exploded after launching from Texas’s Starbase. The incident involved an unexpected, rapid disassembly before stage separation, as reported by Elon Musk’s company.

The Boring Company

The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk in 2016, is a tunnel construction company with the goal of reducing traffic congestion through the use of underground tunnels. The company has already completed several projects, including a tunnel in Las Vegas that transports passengers from one end of the convention center to the other. The Boring Company has also proposed a high-speed tunnel system in Los Angeles, which could revolutionise transportation in the city and transform the way people commute and travel in other cities around the world.

Neuralink

Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk in 2016, is a neurotechnology company that aims to develop devices that can be implanted in the human brain to enhance cognitive abilities. While the company is still in its early stages, it has already made significant progress, with tests showing that its implantable device can control a monkey’s hand movements using only its thoughts. Neuralink’s ultimate goal is to create a brain-machine interface that can allow humans to communicate directly with computers and other devices.

This advanced technology has potential applications in sectors such as healthcare, education, and entertainment, and represents a revolutionary shift in the way we interact with technology.

However, critics have expressed concern regarding the ethical implications of Neuralink’s technology; including the potential for invasions of privacy and a worsening of social inequality. Despite this, Neuralink remains dedicated to its pursuit of advancing neuroscience and technology, with the ultimate objective of enhancing human cognition and transforming the way we interact with machines.

Musk’s Game Rules for Entrepreneurs

Elon Musk’s success in running five companies simultaneously is a testament to his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to achieving his goals. Despite facing challenges and setbacks, he continues to push the boundaries of what is possible and revolutionise various industries.

Entrepreneurs can learn several valuable lessons from Elon Musk’s success in running multiple companies.

Firstly, he prioritises innovation and thinks beyond conventional boundaries to solve problems. Entrepreneurs should also strive to innovate and embrace unconventional approaches to stay ahead of the competition.

Secondly, Musk’s hands-on approach to leadership and willingness to get his hands dirty shows the importance of getting involved in the day-to-day operations of a business.

Thirdly, he’s unafraid to take risks, invest in new technologies, and prioritise long-term goals. Entrepreneurs must learn to take calculated risks and be willing to invest in their visions for long-term success.

Fourthly, Musk is always pushing the limits, staying focused on achieving his goals and setting ambitious targets. Entrepreneurs must maintain a clear vision and focus on long-term goals to ensure business success.

Finally, Musk is known for his ability to assemble and lead world-class teams of engineers and experts. Entrepreneurs should seek out talented individuals and build strong teams with diverse skill sets to achieve business success.
